Separate the food to be stored from food already offered
FDA advises against feeding directly from a jar and then refrigerating that jar for later. Read the serving and storage directions and use clean handling practices. An unchanged appearance does not by itself establish that previously handled food is safe.
Record the relevant information
Keep the product name, opening time or date, label instructions and any handling concern together. If those details are missing or the storage conditions are uncertain, seek guidance from the manufacturer rather than extending the time by guesswork. This site does not certify food safety from a date calculation.
Choose purchase sizes around the real routine
A larger package can cost less per ounce but may not be convenient once opening and storage are considered. Compare the purchased quantity and your existing routine without calculating a child’s feeding requirements. Do not reuse a pouch or container contrary to its directions.
Before you decide
- Follow the exact label.
- Keep food handling history with the date.
- Do not treat smell or appearance as a safety test.
